Why are there still navigation devices at all when there are smartphones?

In consultations, I always hear the statement: “I don’t need anything special, I have my smartphone, Google already helps me. This means that a navigation device doesn’t have to be able to do practically anything, because if we do get lost, we simply Google the way. So why should we buy a navigation device at all, if a smartphone can do everything anyway?

Quite simply, it was built for that! A portable navigation system was built for the sole purpose of getting the user from one place to another. Of course, you have to hand it to Google Maps that it does a decent job for free navigation software and is certainly a good remedy for smaller routes. Real navigation devices, on the other hand, have some advantages over the “smartphone Navi”.

1st advantage: You have very good software. The route guidance is optimal, a lane assistant shows the driver the exact lane on which he should drive. This is very practical for 4-6 lane highways or large interchanges because it does not happen that you take the wrong exit. The software also provides information about important road information such as the maximum speed limit, rest areas, gas stations, road signs are displayed and even traffic jams are reported to the driver (more on this later). Of course, route preferences such as the fastest or shortest route can also be entered. A trip with several stopovers is also no longer a problem for today’s products.

2nd advantage: navigation devices are not only available for cars but also special models for truck GPS navigator, motor homes, motorcycles, bicycles, and also pedestrians or hikers. For example, a truck driver must be able to enter the height of his vehicle so that his body does not suddenly get stuck on the bridge. The same applies to campers; in addition, rest areas for campers and trucks are then displayed to the driver.

Motorcyclists need navigation devices that are waterproof and can be operated with gloves, and these models also have a special power supply.

3rd advantage: Navigation devices offer more safety while driving. This is because they have display surfaces that are easier to read in sunlight than those of smartphones. In addition, the driver is not distracted by incoming messages on the smartphone display.

The manufacturers of navigation devices also do not necessarily see smartphones as the “enemy” but rather as a supplement to their products. Many models now allow smartphones to be paired with the navigation device via Bluetooth or WiFi, enabling users to perform Google searches, call up live traffic information or simply make phone calls – all without having to hold the smartphone in their hands.

The modern voice controls of the Navis allow the driver to operate the device without taking his hands off the steering wheel. This enables a safe and fast journey to the desired destination.
